Case Study — Healthcare
Multi-site optometry practice. HIPAA-aware IT transition.
A Northern Nevada optometry practice with multiple locations replaced its previous IT provider with Sierra Miles. Anonymized at the client's preference.
Situation
What we walked into.
A multi-location optometry practice had grown faster than its previous IT provider could keep up with. Imaging storage was filling up, the backup system hadn't been verified in over a year, PHI was moving through unmonitored email, and the front desk was losing hours per week to slow software.
InterventionWhat Sierra Miles did.
- Documented the full environment — devices, accounts, vendor list, license footprint
- Replaced the backup platform with image-based backup, offsite copy, and scheduled test restores
- Deployed EDR/MDR (SentinelOne + managed SOC) across all endpoints
- Re-architected NAS storage to support imaging growth for the next 24-36 months
- Rebuilt email DLP and secure messaging to keep PHI inside the HIPAA boundary
- Established quarterly business reviews with the practice manager and ownership
What changed.
- BCDR test restores now documented quarterly with named owners
- EDR/MDR coverage measurable and reportable for HIPAA risk analysis
- Front-desk friction reduced; helpdesk traffic dropped after baseline stabilization
- Imaging storage planning extended through 2027 instead of running month-to-month
Where the practice is now.
Sierra Miles continues to support the practice on a monthly managed services agreement with HIPAA-aware operating practices and a Business Associate Agreement on file. Quarterly business reviews keep IT spend aligned with practice growth.
